Spencers Wood grew up on a common. By 1864 all of the common land had been enclosed, and the owners of the east side of Basingstoke Road gradually sold it off for development. By 1880 the village had a population of 600, and Victorian and Edwardian houses were built along the road with bricks baked at a local kiln, while The Square became the heart of the village. The Church of St Michael and All Angels was consecrated in 1908, and the Arts and Crafts village hall opened in 1911.
Many of those houses still stand, and the church built in 1905 near Hyde End Road closed in 1999 and became apartments, so renovation is nothing new here. We deliver skips across Spencers Wood, RG7, and recycle what we collect at our own facility in Reading.
