Bracknell was designated a New Town on 17 June 1949, one of the earliest of the post-war New Towns built to house Londoners displaced by wartime bombing and overcrowding. What started as a small market town of around 5,000 people was planned for a population of 25,000, later expanded to 60,000, and the Bracknell Development Corporation had powers of compulsory purchase to make it happen, absorbing surrounding villages like Easthampstead and Old Bracknell along the way.
That New Town history means Bracknell has been built, rebuilt and expanded more deliberately than almost anywhere else on this list, and that process of renewal continues today in every renovation and clearance project across the town.
