Emmer Green, Reading's northernmost neighbourhood and part of Caversham, was dug for chalk and clay long before it filled with houses. A brick kiln was first recorded on the site in the mid 17th century, the 1844 tithe map shows a brick kiln at the mine site, and by 1877 a bank of kilns stood alongside Kiln Road. The works is thought to have closed in 1947, the brickfield was cleared for redevelopment around 1977 to 1980, and part of Russet Gardens now sits inside the old northern clay pit.
Clearing that brickfield turned up a surprise in 1977, when earthmoving machinery rediscovered a shaft into the old chalk mine. Most jobs here are simpler: renovations, extensions and garden clear-outs. We deliver skips across Emmer Green, RG4, and recycle what we collect at our own facility in Reading.
