Hartley Wintney grew along the old main road from London to the West Country, now the A30, where the housing built along the coaching route became known as Hartley Row. In 1807 Lady Mildmay paid for oaks to be planted on the commons to provide timber for ships after Trafalgar, which is why the commons are still full of oaks today. The population kept growing after the railway reached nearby Winchfield in 1838, and St John's Church was built in 1870 because old St Mary's was no longer big enough.
From the 1960s new housing spread over the northern slopes, followed this century by St Mary's Park and Hartley Row Park, and it all sits alongside Victorian cottages and listed buildings that need renovating and clearing out from time to time.
