North Waltham appears to have grown as a series of linked clusters of houses, with The Green as its focal point, and many of its timber-framed, thatched houses survive, including Batchelors on Popham Lane, dated from its timbers to 1499. The farm buildings opposite Church Cottage were demolished for the primary school, which opened on the site in 1873 to replace the 1833 national school, now a house. The village then expanded with new housing in the 1960s and 1970s, and Old Barn Close was later built on the site of a dismantled listed barn.
