Purley on Thames was almost entirely agricultural until the 20th century, and its riverside began as something far more makeshift than the houses there now. In the 1930s land beside the river was sold off in small plots to campers and fishermen, and during and after the Second World War people moved in for good, living in old railway carriages, buses and huts. A guidance plan agreed in the 1960s gradually brought conventional housing, most of it built since the 1970s at or above the 1947 flood level.
