Lower Earley is the southern part of Earley rather than a town of its own, and its name is far older than its houses. It first meant the low-lying land between the old Maiden Erlegh estate and the River Loddon, mostly Earley Upper Common, Lower Wood Common and a number of farms. Over 6,000 houses were built on the Lower Earley development, along with Hawkedon, Hillside and Radstock primary schools, a large supermarket complex in 1979 and the Maiden Place shopping precinct on Kilnsea Drive in 1988.
