Kingsclere grew up around a medieval market place at the crossroads of the routes to Newbury, Basingstoke and Whitchurch. The 19th century brought a large increase in its size, as Swan Street and George Street were built out beyond the old core, and in 1848 St Mary's Church was substantially reconstructed and refaced in knapped flint. The Victoria Mill was demolished in 1911, the village became a conservation area in 1969, and its bypass opened in 1982.
