Overton was laid out as a planned new town by the Bishops of Winchester in the 13th century, with Winchester Street as a wide market street at right angles to the High Street, a grid still visible today. Henry III granted a weekly market in 1218. The silk mill, which employed around 250 people, was demolished in 1848, the present Town Mill was built in 1900 on a mill site recorded in 1301, and since the Second World War estates of houses have gradually grown around the village to the west, south and east.
That leaves a village where 16th century houses on Winchester Street sit a short walk from post-war estates, and both still get renovated, extended and cleared. We deliver skips across Overton, RG25, and recycle what we collect at our own facility in Reading.
